English I Honors Homework - Friday August 11, 2017

Part I: Introductory E-Mail



Between tonight and 11:59pm Sunday, I want you to send me an e-mail in which you introduce yourself to me. Here are some expectations and guidelines for writing this e-mail.

o   Use proper grammar and conventional spelling

o   Include at least 3 organized paragraphs

o   Send it from the e-mail address you use most frequently

o   Subject line: Full name & class period

o   Tell me about things like…your hobbies, interests, dreams for the future, unusual facts, favorites, dislikes, first impressions of ENGL I, whatever you want to tell me

Hidden Figures Plot Points and Questions

 ·         John Glenn insists that Katherine Johnson check the numbers for his successful Earth orbit mission.

Q: Why did Glenn choose Katherine to check the numbers? What can you infer from his request?

·         Dorothy Vaughan gets hired as a mathematician at Langley.

Q: Summarize the differences between employment opportunities for black people and white people during this time.

·         African Americans embrace idea of double VV for victory

Q: What do the two Vs stand for?

·         Katherine and her colleagues begin to dream of missions to other planets.

Q: Connect the phrase “reach for the stars” to these women’s stories in a literal, and figurative, manner.



·         Russia builds, launches, Sputnik.

Q: How did the US react to this demonstration of Russian technological power? What new fear became widespread in response to this event?

·         African Americans do not have equal rights, especially in the south.

Q: In the context of this story, why is this setting fact so important to the rest of the story?

·         FDR creates Fair Employment Practices Committee.

Q: He also ordered the desegregation of the federal government and defense agency. What effect did this have on the diversity of job applicants?

·         Miriam Mann steals “Colored” sign from cafeteria on many occasions.

Q: What does this action show us about Miriam’s character? Does this action foreshadow later instances of protest?

·         WWII ends and servicemen return home.

Q: How did their return affect many women who had entered the workplace? Also, how did some employers change their hiring practices?

·         Electronic computers begin to replace human computers.



Q: What did Dorothy Vaughan do, and recommend as a course of action to the women in her group, to keep from becoming obsolete?





Bonus: Compare and contrast “black jobs”, “good black jobs”, and “very good black jobs” from this time period.



Bonus: The war effort was not popular with all African Americans. Why not?
